I don't know how to fight for myself when my kids seem so much more important.
Professional development and missed preps and illegal ratios seem unimportant when I look at all that needs to be accomplished.
Today I got scolded for not filling out a form to fix my printers.
I really don't care about printers.
Could we fix my kids first please?

This is not my normal advice, and you can take it or leave it, but these things that are illegal are SO illegal that fighting them IS a step along the way to fixing the kids. You cannot help your students if your classroom is overcrowded (it's downright dangerous for them and for you) and if you are worn down to nothing by lost preps. You are right to put the children first - but what you describe on this blog is grossly unacceptable! Still, you know your own situation best. In my first year teaching - and since - there have been things I have overlooked because the political ramifications of fighting them were far more damaging then the problems themselves. Do what you think is right, but know that you have the support of so many of us who are reading.
